Lawn & Garden by the Numbers
A State of the Industry Report (2010-11)

$120.7 BILLION: Total projected value of the do-it-yourself gardening and landscaping business in the U.S. for 2010, according to Nursery Retailer magazine (according to the Fredonia Group, $32.9 billion are consumables). This represents an increase in 2010 of 2.9% over the previous year.
118 MILLION: Number of U.S. Households in 2009 with at least one person with a green thumb, according to the Fredonia Group. In fact, this number continues to grow as Baby Boomers age and increasingly discover the joys of gardening and yard work. Most industry experts agree that Lawn & Garden is one of the most dynamic categories in the entire do-it-yourself market and consistent annual growth is expected well into this century!
25 MILLION: Acres of green lawn in the United States, roughly an area equivalent to the size of the State of Pennsylvania. That's a lot of turf—and a lot of turf needs a lot of fertilizer. Here is another number related to lawns: 4 (as in four steps). Most lawn care experts agree that a four-step fertilizer program containing Crabgrass Preventer, Weed & Feed, Lawn Fertilizer/Insect Control and Winterizer can help your customers achieve spectacular results and a healthy lawn. This means repeat business! Fertilizer is typically the first major purchase of the lawn & garden selling season; thus, it can impact greatly how your customers perceive not only your Lawn & Garden Department, but also your entire store!
360: Typical yield, in pounds, from a well cared-for 400 square-foot mixed vegetable garden, according to the National Gardening Association. That’s a lot of seed, soil, tools and pest controls.
300: Number of calories burned by an hour’s worth of weeding in the garden, the equivalent of walking or bicycling at a moderate pace. The message: Gardening is healthy! Be sure you offer your customers those products that will make them get the most from their workout.
$440: Average annual amount spent per household on gardening supplies. How much do your customers spend in your store on lawn & garden?
